A greyhound that had been stranded on the 17th-floor roof of Villa Kejora Apartment in Relau, Penang, for nine days has died after falling from the building.
The dog’s plight first came to light on 20 August through a Facebook post by the Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS).
The group reported that the animal had been stuck on the rooftop, prompting urgent calls for assistance.
Over the following days, volunteers and animal lovers rallied in an effort to save the greyhound.
4PAWS sought the help of government agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), and the Civil Defence Force (JPAM).
Volunteers from other non-profit groups also stepped forward to assist.
Rescuers tried every method they could think of to bring the dog back to safety.
At one point, they even attempted to lure it with fried chicken.
Despite hours of effort, the dog refused to leave the rooftop.
On the morning of 28 August, the apartment’s cleaning staff discovered the greyhound’s body at the foot of the building around 8am.
According to reports, the animal is believed to have slipped during heavy rain before the fatal fall.
News of the tragedy has sparked grief among residents and members of the public who had followed the case closely.
Many had held out hope that the dog would be rescued in time.
