AUSTRALIA: Dashcam footage posted to the Chinese social media platform Rednote shows a couple attempting to stop the shooter during the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney.

The video captures the moment a man tackles the gunman on Campbell Parade as he emerges from his car, which had an Islamic State flag draped over the front windscreen.

Couple identified as Boris and Sofia Gurman

The couple have been identified as Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61, by their family.

In the footage, Boris, wearing a purple shirt, appears to push the attacker, later identified as Sajid Akram, onto the road and wrestle a gun from his hands.

Sofia is also seen involved in the confrontation.

Dashcam owner shares footage

The footage was posted by a Sydney resident whose dashcam unexpectedly captured the incident.

Writing in Mandarin on Rednote, she described the couple as civilian heroes.

“Such civilian heroes shouldn’t be forgotten,” she wrote. “I’m truly heartbroken.”

Separate drone footage taken afterwards shows the couple lying motionless together on the footpath.

Family tribute and wider attack

In a statement, the Gurmans’ family said the couple stepped in to protect others.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness,” the statement said.

Police have described the attack as a terrorist incident targeting the Jewish community.

At least 15 people were killed, with victims aged between 10 and 87.

A further 22 people remain in hospital, nine in critical condition.

Another bystander also intervened

Another bystander, Ahmed al Ahmed, was also hailed as a hero after confronting one of the attackers and wresting a gun away. He was shot multiple times but survived, and has since undergone surgery for his injuries.
