- The near-miss sparked online discussion, blending humour with concerns over marine safety awareness.
CHINA: What began as an ordinary fishing trip in the waters off Beihai, Guangxi, nearly ended in serious tragedy when a man accidentally hooked a diver working beneath the surface.
Mr Hu, the angler involved, recalled feeling strong resistance on his fishing rod, accompanied by intense pulling from below. Convinced that he had hooked a large fish, he exerted all his strength to reel it in, driven by excitement and instinct. At that moment, nothing suggested danger — only the thrill of what he believed was a rare and valuable catch.
The shock came when the line finally broke the surface. Instead of a fish, a fully equipped diver emerged from the water. Mr Hu soon realised that his fishing hook had caught onto the diver’s oxygen tank, turning what felt like a tug-of-war with a big fish into a frightening misunderstanding between two people sharing the same waters.
Shock, Anger and Immediate Apologies
The diver, clearly startled by the sudden and forceful pull, surfaced and removed his mask, expressing anger at what he perceived as an unexpected “attack”. Mr Hu, stunned and instantly aware of the seriousness of the situation, did not attempt to argue. Knowing he was at fault, he apologised repeatedly and remained silent as the diver scolded him.
Although no one was injured, the emotional impact lingered. Mr Hu later admitted that the incident left him shaken. He reflected that if the hook had caught a more critical part of the diver’s equipment or body, or if the diver had panicked underwater, the outcome could have been catastrophic.
A Close Call That Highlights Hidden Dangers
Online reactions ranged from humour to serious concern. One user commented that they had only ever “caught divers” in fishing games before, adding: “I knew it would be possible to fish up a diver in real life one day.” The remark was accompanied by a screenshot from a fishing game showing a player’s line hooking a diver instead of a fish.

However, many others pointed out that the incident exposed real safety risks that are often overlooked. Public waters may appear open and unrestricted, but they are frequently shared by different activities operating in separate layers.

While fishing boats and anglers occupy the surface, underwater spaces may be used simultaneously by divers, aquaculture workers or survey teams. When individuals focus solely on their own activity without observing their surroundings or recognising overlapping uses, dangerous cross-activity accidents can occur.
Though the incident ended as a harmless misunderstanding, it serves as a stark reminder that greater awareness, communication and safety precautions are essential to prevent such near-misses from becoming fatal accidents.
