CHINA: A female tourist was injured after being attacked by a snow leopard in Xinjiang province, China, on the evening of 23 January.

According to local reports, the incident occurred at around 7pm in the Talat village area of Koktokay Township, as the tourist was returning to her hotel after skiing.

The case drew public attention after videos of the incident began circulating widely on social media.

Videos Show Chaotic Scene

One video showed a wild animal crouching near the injured tourist as bystanders shouted for help and urged others to contact police and emergency services.

In another clip, the tourist — dressed in a purple jacket and wearing a black helmet — was seen being supported by several people. She covered her face with her hands, while blood could be seen on her clothing.

Tourist Allegedly Ignored Warnings

Local reports said the tourist first noticed the snow leopard resting in the snow and attempted to photograph it.

However, as the animal was some distance away, she reportedly moved closer despite warnings from fellow tourists.

She is believed to have approached within about three metres of the snow leopard before it suddenly lunged at her and bit her in the face.

The tourist fell to the ground immediately, but her helmet helped prevent more serious injuries.

A ski instructor at the scene reportedly intervened, using his ski poles to chase the snow leopard away.

The injured tourist was subsequently rushed to Fuyun County People’s Hospital for treatment.

Authorities Issue Safety Warning

In a statement posted on official platforms, local forestry, grassland, culture and tourism authorities confirmed the incident and said the injured tourist was in stable condition.

They added that safety patrols and protective measures have been strengthened in the area, along with public education efforts.

Residents and visitors were reminded to maintain a safe distance from wild animals and to immediately report any wildlife encounters to the authorities.
