Shenzhen shopper finds live rat inside box of mochi bought via Sam’s Club delivery
A Shenzhen consumer was horrified to find a live rat inside a sealed box of mochi delivered via Sam’s Club’s “Express Delivery” service, prompting investigations and renewed concerns about quality control.

CHINA: A Shenzhen resident said she ordered several items through the Sam’s Club App on 8 December, including a box of mochi via the retailer’s “Express Delivery” service.
When she opened the silver insulated bag that evening, she was terrified to find a live dark-grey rat nestled inside the transparent mochi box.
Photos she posted online showed the rodent inside what appeared to be a fully sealed plastic container, triggering widespread disbelief and alarm.

Sam’s Club Launches Full Investigation
On 9 December, Sam’s Club China responded, saying it “attaches great importance to food safety and member experience”. The company said it immediately launched a full-chain inspection with a professional pest-control contractor.
After reviewing production, packaging, warehousing and picking records, as well as internal surveillance footage, the retailer said no signs of infestation were found within its facilities.

Blamed on Outdoor Pickup-Point Contamination
The retailer explained that the order’s pickup point was located outdoors. Pest-control experts who inspected the site found nearby foliage and evidence of wild pest activity.
Sam’s Club said the incident was “most likely caused by external pests entering during the pickup-point holding period”. The company added that it has since contacted the customer and resolved the matter, apologising for the distress caused.
