SINGAPORE – An Australian influencer’s chance meeting with a 91-year-old cleaner at ION Orchard mall has gone viral, drawing widespread praise and raising questions about elderly labour in Singapore.

Jaden Laing, who brands himself as the “third strongest man in Australia”, posted the clip on Instagram, where it has attracted more than 205,000 likes.

Conversation with a 91-year-old cleaner

In the video, Laing expressed disbelief at the age of restroom attendant Nam A Young, who told him he works 12-hour shifts daily, from 7am to 7pm.

“You’re 91 years old? No way. Still working? You’re the man, brother,” Laing said, before giving him a fist bump.

When asked about his health, A Young explained that his routine of “work, go back, sleep” kept him going.

A gesture of kindness

Laing ended the interaction by gifting A Young cash, estimated by viewers to be between S$200 and S$300, and encouraging him to enjoy a meal. He hugged the cleaner, saying: “Love you, brother. Take care. Keep working hard, you’re a soldier.”

The moment was captured on video, with A Young smiling broadly in response.

Praise and reflection online

Thousands of comments praised Laing for his kindness and respect. One user wrote: “The beautiful elderly gentleman was so happy that someone stopped to ask him how he was, and showed a genuine interest in him.”

Others, however, noted the bittersweet reality that a 91-year-old man continues to work such long hours. Netizens observed that Laing’s gift could cover groceries for a month, highlighting the financial strain faced by many seniors.

Wider discussion on elderly workers

The video has reignited online conversations about Singapore’s ageing workforce, particularly seniors in physically demanding roles such as cleaning and security. Many users expressed both admiration for A Young’s dedication and concern about elderly workers’ wellbeing.
