SINGAPORE: Two men have been arrested following a fatal car crash that killed a woman at a night market in Circuit Road on 11 July.
Police confirmed on 14 July that the suspects, aged 38 and 40, were detained in connection with the late-night incident.
Authorities were alerted at about 11.45pm to an accident involving a rental car and a pedestrian at a pasar malam stall located at Block 52A Circuit Road.
The 66-year-old woman, who was reportedly washing up at her food stall, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic.
Unlicensed driver fled the scene
Investigations revealed that the 40-year-old man behind the wheel did not possess a valid driving licence. He allegedly fled the scene without stopping to help the victim.
Police later arrested him for multiple offences, including dangerous driving causing death, driving without a valid licence, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after an accident.
His companion, a 38-year-old man believed to have rented the car, was arrested at the scene for permitting an unlicensed and uninsured driver to operate the vehicle.
Car-sharing vehicle involved in crash
Photos shared by community platform SGRV on Facebook showed a black GetGo car surrounded by debris within the night market area. Several stalls appeared damaged.
According to Chinese-language daily Shin Min Daily News, the victim was part of a team running a snack stall known for selling traditional Chinese desserts such as tutu kueh.
The night market, which began operations on 5 July, comprises five stalls and was scheduled to run until 20 July.
GetGo expresses condolences and cooperation
Car-sharing firm GetGo confirmed that the vehicle involved was part of its fleet and that the incident represented a “severe breach” of its terms of service.
In a statement, the company extended its condolences to the victim’s family and said it was fully cooperating with ongoing police investigations.
“The driver was not an authorised user of the vehicle,” the company said, adding that support is being provided to those affected.
Police urge responsibility and compassion on the road
Police reminded motorists that leaving the scene of an accident without offering assistance is a serious criminal offence under Singapore law.
They urged all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and to render aid immediately when accidents occur.
“Firm action will be taken against offenders who endanger lives or fail to fulfil their responsibilities following a collision,” the statement added.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
