- A Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) delegate was assaulted during a burglary in Paris.
- Thieves used a key to enter, escaping with luxury goods worth up to €7 million (US$8.3 million).
- Authorities found no forced entry; a criminal investigation is ongoing
A delegate of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) was assaulted and robbed in his Paris residence, with losses estimated between €6 million and €7 million (approximately US$7.1 million to US$8.3 million), according to the Paris prosecutor’s office on 30 January.
The incident occurred during the night of 29 to 30 January in the 16th arrondissement, a wealthy and diplomatic district in western Paris.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was asleep when two intruders entered the residence. According to authorities, there were no signs of forced entry, and it is believed the burglars used a key—an element that could result in aggravated charges under French law.
Prosecutors confirmed the lawmaker “was assaulted in his sleep and reports the theft of several pieces of jewellery and luxury goods.”
A police source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the delegate was awakened by noise and then struck on the head before the burglars fled.
The thieves escaped with a collection of valuables including watches, brooches, and other luxury items. The total value of stolen goods was placed between €6 million and €7 million—equivalent to US$7.1 million to US$8.3 million at current exchange rates.
The Paris police are continuing investigations. No suspects have been identified or arrested, and the motive behind the burglary remains unclear.
The method of access—using a key rather than force—has led investigators to consider the possibility of premeditation or insider knowledge.
In recent years, Paris has witnessed a series of high-value burglaries targeting upscale residences and individuals of means. The 16th arrondissement, home to embassies and affluent households, has been especially affected.
