Hong Kong woman arrested after wielding cleaver, scissors at Sheung Shui eatery
A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Hong Kong after allegedly brandishing a chopper and scissors at a restaurant in Sheung Shui and attacking police officers who responded to the scene. Authorities said the incident was triggered after she failed to make a mobile payment when her phone ran out of power.

HONG KONG: A woman was arrested in Hong Kong’s Sheung Shui district after a late-night disturbance at a local eatery escalated into a confrontation with police officers in riot gear.
Police said they were alerted shortly after midnight on 3 January 2026 to reports of a woman behaving aggressively and wielding sharp weapons inside a restaurant along Lung Sum Avenue.
Videos circulating online showed officers gathering outside the premises before entering to confront the suspect, who was armed with a chopper and a pair of scissors.
Confrontation with police
Footage filmed inside the eatery showed the woman standing alone among overturned items and spilled drinks.
As officers opened the restaurant’s sliding door, she allegedly rushed toward them and swung the chopper at their riot shields.
Police said more officers entered the restaurant from behind to restrain her.
At least 13 officers were deployed before she was pinned to the floor and taken into custody.
Cause of incident
According to police, the woman, surnamed Liu, had attempted to pay for her meal using the WeChat app but was unable to do so because her phone battery was depleted.
Although the restaurant owner suggested charging the device on-site, Liu reportedly became emotionally agitated.
She then took a chopper and scissors from the kitchen and began waving them, prompting staff and patrons to flee.
A phone belonging to the eatery was also damaged during the incident.
Arrest and charges
The 32-year-old, who is from China’s Jilin province, had arrived in Hong Kong on 2 Jan after travelling from Vietnam, police said.
She sustained injuries to her hands and was taken to hospital before being arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, criminal damage, and assaulting a police officer.
The case has been handed to the Tai Po District Criminal Investigation Team.
Investigations are ongoing.
