The Aceh provincial government has sent formal invitations to two United Nations agencies—the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)—to take part in post-disaster recovery efforts following recent floods and landslides.

Government spokesperson Muhammad MTA confirmed on Sunday, December 14, 2025, that the administration had reached out to international agencies currently operating in Indonesia. “Yes, it is true. We have written to UNDP and UNICEF to participate in post-disaster recovery,” he said.

UNDP focuses on national development issues, including poverty alleviation and reducing inequality, while UNICEF concentrates on child welfare. According to Muhammad, both agencies have a long history of cooperation with the Indonesian government, including in Aceh. He noted that UNICEF is running programs in the province until early 2026, making its involvement in recovery efforts particularly relevant.

The Aceh government hopes that support from the two agencies will strengthen recovery, especially in sectors aligned with their respective areas of expertise.

“As the regional government, we are taking the initiative to ensure that international agencies still active in Indonesia can continue their work in Aceh, especially given the current disaster situation,” Muhammad said.

He added that any assistance from UNDP and UNICEF would be aligned with each agency’s core mandates and institutional programs. Further coordination will be carried out with the central government and other relevant bodies to support post-disaster recovery in the province.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll from floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has exceeded 1,000. As of Sunday, December 14, 2025, BNPB’s emergency response geoportal recorded 1,016 fatalities.

Aceh has reported the highest number of deaths, with at least 415 people killed across several districts and cities. The figures indicate that the province has been the worst affected by the series of hydrometeorological disasters that have struck Sumatra.
