A Singaporean man was found dead in his Batam home on Saturday (7 June), after neighbours reported a foul odour coming from the property.

The deceased, identified as 70-year-old Kamal Bin Ahmad, was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition at his residence in the Masyeba Gading Mas Residential Area, Sekupang, Batam, at around 4pm local time, according to local outlet TribunBatam.

Illness and medications found

Early investigations suggest Kamal had been dead for about five days. Police reported finding multiple medications inside the home, including Atorvastatin, Vitamin C, Glucosamine Sulfate, Harnal Ocas, Dermasone, and Panadol Extra.

“Information from neighbours indicated he had long suffered from chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol,” said Inspector Ridho Lubis, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Sekupang Police.

Discovery by neighbours

Neighbours told police they had not seen Kamal for nearly a week. Suspicion grew when they noticed a strong smell coming from the house. They alerted local security personnel, who then called the police.

Officers forced entry into the property and found Kamal lying on his right side, dressed only in a floral-patterned shirt, with no trousers.

Next steps

Kamal’s body was transported to Bhayangkara Hospital at the Riau Islands Police Headquarters for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Police have contacted Kamal’s wife, who is in Singapore, and requested that she travel to Batam to assist with arrangements.

Authorities said they will wait for medical findings before concluding whether his death was due to illness or other causes.
