The attack was witnessed by onlookers, causing shock and distress among those present.
Teenager Entered Enclosure Despite Security
Local media reported that Gerson de Melo Machado scaled a 20-foot wall to break into the lioness’s pen.
Zoo security reportedly tried to stop him, but he moved too quickly.
The state’s Civil Police forensics team has not ruled out whether Machado’s actions were suicidal.
Background and Personal Circumstances
Machado had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had a history of institutional care.
He grew up in extreme poverty and came from a family with a history of mental health issues.
Child welfare counselor Verônica Oliveira stated that Machado had been excluded by the system and had faced multiple legal and social challenges throughout his life.
According to Oliveira, Machado had previously attempted to stow away on a plane to pursue his dream of taming lions.
She described his cognitive abilities as limited, noting that he often needed guidance and support.
Zoo Response and Safety Measures
The zoo confirmed Machado’s death in an Instagram post and immediately closed to the public.
It emphasized that all safety protocols were followed and that authorities were involved in the investigation.
The park stated it maintains strict safety standards and expressed condolences to Machado’s family.
Following the incident, the zoo also shared an update on the lioness, Leona.
She was evaluated by the technical team, remains under continuous monitoring, and is not being considered for euthanasia.
