PORT DICKSON, Malaysia – Two young siblings drowned after their car slid into a river on the morning of 4 September. The victims were an eight-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother.

The children were inside the vehicle parked near the riverside, while their 46-year-old father had stepped out to smoke. His 41-year-old girlfriend was also in the car at the time.

Vehicle plunges into water

According to Port Dickson District Police Chief Superintendent Maslan Udin, the car suddenly plunged into the river at around 11.40am. Members of the public rushed to assist after hearing the father’s cries. They managed to rescue the woman, but the two children were trapped inside.

Rescuers later recovered the girl’s body at 1.24pm, followed by her younger brother at 1.47pm. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene despite resuscitation efforts. Their bodies were taken to Port Dickson Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Technical issues suspected

Superintendent Maslan said the family had been in the area for two to three days to rest and fish. The vehicle was parked approximately 10 metres from the riverbank with its engine off.

“This incident is believed to have been caused by a technical problem with the vehicle,” he said. The children were found in the front passenger seat of the overturned car, submerged about four metres below the surface.

Police uncover suspicious details

However, the case later took a different turn. Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad confirmed that the father and his girlfriend were arrested after providing questionable statements to investigators.

Checks revealed that the father had 16 previous criminal records and is still wanted in connection with four cases. Police also discovered that the vehicle involved had been reported missing in Johor in 2022.

Ongoing investigations

Although urine tests on both adults returned negative, they were remanded for seven days until 11 September to assist with investigations.

Authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the case to come forward.
