BENTONG, Malaysia – A 72-year-old woman in Malaysia was left traumatised after two men allegedly coerced her into withdrawing her entire life savings of RM40,000 (approximately US$9,000) from the bank, before abandoning her on the streets.
The victim, Madam Zhang Ruifang (张瑞芳), lives alone in Kampung Sungai Marong, Bentong, Pahang state. According to her eldest daughter, Lin Liqing (林丽箐), her mother was taken away from her home yesterday afternoon (1 Sept) by two men.
Forced withdrawal of savings
Madam Zhang was then brought to a bank in Rawang, Selangor, where she was made to withdraw her RM40,000 savings. After the transaction, she was reportedly left to wander on the streets overnight.
“She spent the whole night outside, without food or sleep,” Ms Lin told Sin Chew Daily. “The first priority now is to make sure my mother is safe and cared for.”
Search by family and volunteers
When Madam Zhang failed to return home, her family grew worried and immediately began searching for her. They also posted appeals on social media and reviewed CCTV footage. One recording showed two men leading her away, while another captured a black SUV believed to be involved.
With the help of the Rawang Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, Madam Zhang was eventually found safe earlier today.
Public concern and online response
The case has sparked concern online, with many netizens expressing sympathy for the elderly woman and condemning the men’s alleged actions. Others urged families and communities to stay alert against similar incidents, particularly involving vulnerable seniors.
Ms Lin added that her family hopes this case serves as a reminder for the public to keep a closer eye on elderly relatives and neighbours.
