KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — On 6 October, a 17-year-old student in Kuala Lumpur was seriously injured after a tree collapsed on her during a storm in the Taman Desa area.
Trapped Under Fallen Tree During Storm
The teenager had been walking with friends to a tuition class when strong winds swept through the neighbourhood.
A viral video captured the storm moments before the tree came crashing down, trapping her under its branches while her friends narrowly escaped.
Passersby quickly came to her aid and called for an ambulance.
She was taken to Sunway Medical Centre, where doctors performed emergency surgery to decompress her spinal cord and stabilise her spine.
A subsequent operation was carried out to repair fractures in her leg.
Unable to Feel Lower Body After Regaining Consciousness
Her mother said that when the girl regained consciousness, she was unable to feel her lower body.
She shared that both her daughter and her friends remain deeply traumatised by the incident and are receiving psychological support.
Speaking to World of Buzz, the mother described feeling helpless as she watched her daughter in pain and struggling to recover.
MP Pledges Support and Calls for Action
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok visited the family at the hospital on 11 October and pledged RM10,000 (about US$2,100) in financial assistance to help with medical costs.
She said she would raise the matter with the Federal Territories Minister and the Kuala Lumpur Mayor, urging authorities to remove hazardous trees promptly, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.
