MALAYSIA: The Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on 10 December descended into chaos after opposition representatives raised a police report alleging that a government State Assemblyman (ADUN) had an affair with another man’s wife — an allegation that recently went viral on social media.

The claim stemmed from a Facebook post by blogger and activist Datuk Zaharin Mohd Yasin, who alleged that an UMNO assemblyman in Melaka was involved in misconduct with someone’s wife.

The issue was brought up by Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis (PN–Rembia) during his adjournment speech, immediately triggering heated exchanges among assembly members.

Several government representatives accused him of breaching the Standing Orders and called for action to be taken against him.

Deputy Speaker Kerk Chee Yee subsequently proposed invoking Standing Order 20(1)(m)(1) against Muhammad Jailani for making what he described as malicious allegations and personal accusations against another member of the House.

The uproar intensified after Muhammad Jailani cited a police report lodged by a man believed to be the husband of the woman involved, claiming that the ADUN had engaged in an extramarital affair with his wife.

Government Bloc Pushes Back

The allegation prompted a strong response from EXCO member Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh (BN–Merlimau), who stood up to condemn the accusation and question Muhammad Jailani’s credibility.

“He should be focusing on issues affecting the people of Rembia, not bringing up absurd matters like this,” Dr Akmal said. “If you want to raise something, raise what the people want to hear — not trivial issues that intrude into others’ personal lives.”

Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halim (BN–Duyong) also intervened, revealing that the woman named in the viral claim had lodged a police report denying the alleged affair.

He added that the matter is currently before the court, rendering the allegation out of bounds under assembly rules.

“Rembia (Muhammad Jailani) has violated Standing Order 20(1)(g), which prohibits any member from raising matters already brought to court, and Standing Order 20(1)(m)(1) for making malicious allegations against fellow assembly members,” he said.

“If you want to raise an issue, you must have the facts — not do it as you please.”

Several other government bloc ADUNs also criticised the opposition member, including Datuk Rais Yasin (BN–Paya Rumput), Datuk Abd Razak Abd Rahman (BN–Telok Mas), Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zahar (BN–Rim), Datuk VP Shanmugam (BN–Gadek), Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem (BN–Machap Jaya) and Datuk Zaidi Attan (BN–Serkam).

The Deputy Speaker later cut short Muhammad Jailani’s speech before proceeding with the adjournment remarks by Datuk Siti Faizah Abd Azis (BN–Sungai Rambai).

Earlier Warnings Against Slander

In November, Dr Akmal had publicly stated that he would not shield any individual implicated in misconduct, provided there was solid evidence to back the claims.

“For me, if you have evidence, present it. Don’t talk nonsense. The world is borderless today, so if you really have evidence, show it,” he said at the time, in response to allegations involving an ADUN.

He stressed that slander and unverified claims not only damage reputations but also harm the party and the state government.

“If there is evidence, state it. We are firm on this matter. For example, in the case involving a UMNO Youth EXCO member who committed misconduct, I allowed the matter to be resolved properly,” he said.

Dr Akmal reiterated that the state government does not shield individuals proven guilty of wrongdoing.
