MALAYSIA: A freshly minted medical graduate from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has earned widespread praise from netizens after rushing to assist an elderly woman who collapsed the moment he stepped out of his convocation hall.
According to a Facebook post by UPM on Tuesday (2 Dec), the graduate, Muhammad Husni Abu Bakar from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), immediately administered emergency aid when he saw the woman pass out outside the UPM convocation hall — all while he was still in his mortarboard and gown.
UPM described the incident as an unexpected but defining moment during its 49th Convocation Ceremony.
“The 49th UPM Convocation Ceremony was an extraordinary experience for Muhammad Husni Abu Bakar, a Medical Doctor graduate from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), when he unexpectedly helped provide initial treatment to an elderly person who collapsed as soon as he left the hall,” the university wrote.
Calm Response and Professional Assessment
The university noted that Muhammad Husni quickly assessed the victim’s condition using the basic ABC (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) emergency principles, stabilising her breathing and securing the surrounding area. His calm and decisive response drew admiration from many bystanders.
UPM added that he checked the woman’s pulse, responsiveness and respiratory condition before her family took her to hospital for further treatment. He also advised the public to remain calm in emergencies, perform basic checks and seek help from trained individuals.
The university shared that Muhammad Husni, who is currently undergoing medical graduate training at Seri Manjung Hospital in Perak, had aspired to pursue medicine since Form Three — a passion that deepened after he lost his father to Covid-19.
“His story on his Convocation Day not only highlights his calmness and concern as a medical graduate, but also reflects the spirit of a young doctor determined to make a difference in the lives of others,” UPM added.
Netizens Praise Graduate’s Compassion and Dedication
Under UPM’s Facebook post, many netizens congratulated Muhammad Husni on completing his studies and commended him for stepping in to help without hesitation.

One user said this is the kind of doctor the public wants — someone who applies what he has learned even in an emergency.

Another user expressed hope that he will continue to remain devoted in his service to others.

A separate user noted that the incident shows the importance of education, urging young people not to be swayed by claims that education is unimportant and encouraging them instead to keep learning and contribute to society.
