MALAYSIA: A lorry owner went to the extent of setting his own vehicle on fire to prevent it from being seized by the Terengganu Road Transport Department (RTD) on 22 October 2025.
The incident took place around 1.30 pm in front of a school in Kuala Nerus, when a team from the state RTD stopped the lorry for inspection.
Multiple Violations Found
Terengganu RTD director Zamri Samion said checks revealed that the driver was underage and that the vehicle’s motor licence had expired for more than two years.
He added that the lorry had also not undergone a Puspakom inspection since 2023.
“We decided to seize the lorry. However, when the owner later arrived at the scene, he refused to cooperate and set the vehicle on fire in an attempt to obstruct our officers from carrying out their duties,” he said in a statement.
Outstanding Summonses
Initial investigations showed that the lorry belonged to a company with six active summonses, while the driver had four summonses.
Zamri said the offences included driving without a valid licence, no insurance coverage, employing an underage driver, and two cases of illegal vehicle modifications.
He said the RTD would continue to take stern action against anyone who acts outside the boundaries of the law, in accordance with the Road Transport Act 1987.
The case has also been referred to the Labour Department and police for investigation into obstruction of public servants in the performance of official duties.
