KULIM, KEDAH — A Deepavali celebration in Kulim, Kedah, turned chaotic after a fireworks explosion injured 22 people early on 20 October 2025, leaving one man seriously hurt and 21 others with minor wounds.

Fireworks misfire causes panic during festive night

According to Kulim police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Azizan, the explosion occurred around 12.45am, when a group of residents gathered for an informal roadside fireworks display.
“One man sustained a 5cm laceration on his forehead, while 21 others, including a Bangladeshi national, suffered minor burns and cuts on their hands caused by firecracker residue,” he said.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene to provide first aid, and the situation was brought under control by 1.30am. Traffic, which had been heavily congested, was later restored.

Two men arrested, one believed to be intoxicated

Police later arrested two men to assist with investigations into the explosion. “Initial investigations found that the suspects were hanging out with several friends at the scene. The first suspect, who was intoxicated, had purchased RM200 (approximately US$42) worth of fireworks known locally as kelapa from a nearby stall,” said Supt Zulkifli.

He added that police first received reports from a crime prevention patrol unit between 9pm and 2am, which noted heavy crowds and congestion before the explosion.

Investigations ongoing into unlicensed fireworks display

Authorities confirmed that the explosion occurred during a public roadside fireworks display that was not officially sanctioned or licensed. “Upon arrival, officers found a crowd gathered, with several people injured. The injuries were believed to have been caused by exploding firecrackers,” Supt Zulkifli said.

He urged the public to exercise caution and avoid purchasing or igniting unlicensed fireworks during festive periods, citing the dangers of handling high-powered explosives without safety supervision.
