MALAYSIA: A father of two was sentenced to one month in jail after pleading guilty to shoplifting from a supermarket in Kuala Terengganu.
The accused, Muhamad Azrul Haqim Azman, entered his plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak at the Magistrates’ Court on 5 January, according to Sinar Harian.
According to the charge, Azrul committed the offence at about 9.30pm on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2026, inside the supermarket.
He was found to have stolen a bottle of Carrie Junior Hair and Body Wash, two units of Selsun 2-in-1 shampoo, a Lifebuoy body wash and a Byford singlet.
The total value of the items amounted to RM113.70 (US$28).
He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine. Repeat offenders may also be subjected to whipping.
In mitigation, Azrul’s lawyer urged the court to show leniency, stating that his client is married with two young children aged four years and three months, and had recently lost his job.
As a result, he had no fixed source of income.
The court was told that the stolen items were not meant for resale, but were taken to meet the daily needs of Azrul and his family.
His lawyer also highlighted that Azrul suffers from high blood pressure and that this was his first offence.
After considering the submissions, the court sentenced Azrul to one month’s imprisonment. The sentence will take effect from the date of his arrest on 2 January.
