THAILAND: A Malaysian journalist died while returning home from an assignment in flood-hit Hatyai, in Thailand’s Songkhla Province.
Mohamad Asri Shafii, 49, a correspondent with Astro Awani, passed away on the morning of 26 November after documenting the evacuation of Malaysians affected by the severe floods.

Final Assignment Amid Severe Floods
Asri had been reporting on the worsening flood situation when his vehicle became stuck in rising waters.
According to his wife, Norhanani Ahmad, the car stalled and could not be restarted. He attempted to push the vehicle but collapsed during the effort.
She said Asri had a history of heart disease and believes exhaustion from covering the floods may have triggered a heart attack.
A Final Message to His Family
Before his death, Asri sent one last WhatsApp voice note to his wife, saying: “I love you all. Please take good care of yourselves.”
Norhanani said she was shocked by the news of her husband’s passing, adding that he had expressed concern about potential flooding near their home in Perlis and had planned to return quickly.
A Veteran Journalist Remembered
Asri’s career included stints at RTM and Bernama before he became Astro Awani’s correspondent in Perlis.
He leaves behind his wife and six children, the youngest just 11 years old.
