MELAKA, Malaysia — The suspect who slashed an 18-year-old woman in Tangga Batu has been arrested and confessed to harbouring romantic feelings for the victim, police said on Tuesday (21 Oct).
The 25-year-old unemployed man was detained less than 24 hours after the incident, which occurred along Jalan Batu 9, Tangga Batu, on Monday evening.
Police also seized a 27-centimetre knife believed to have been used in the attack.
Confession Shocked Public
Melaka Tengah Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the suspect admitted to both committing the act and having feelings for the victim.
The revelation left the public stunned, as the motive appeared personal rather than criminal.
Police said further investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances leading up to the assault.
Victim Slashed While Riding Home
The incident took place around 4.45 pm when the 18-year-old victim, who works as a factory operator, was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her 21-year-old sister-in-law.
She reportedly felt a sharp pain in her back before realising she was bleeding.
The victim was later taken for treatment for injuries to her back.
Family Urges Public Not to Speculate
A family member identified as Yati said she was shocked upon learning that her younger brother was behind the attack.
“The victim lives near our mother’s house in Tangga Batu, but I live in Sungai Udang, so when I found out, I was really shocked,” she told Sinar Harian.
Yati said her brother had never shown signs of distress or shared any personal problems before the incident.
She urged the public not to speculate, saying unfounded claims could affect both families emotionally.
Police are investigating the case under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt with a weapon.
