A video of a Singapore-registered car attempting to refuel with RON95 petrol in Johor Bahru has drawn widespread attention online after a Malaysian man stepped in to stop the act.

The 53-second clip, reportedly recorded at a Petronas station in Taman Tasek on 26 August, shows the man calmly reminding the driver that RON95 is reserved for Malaysia-registered vehicles only.

His composed manner and polite but firm tone won praise from viewers, with some calling him a hero.

The man, identified as Izzul Islam, had also shared dashcam footage of the incident on social media.

According to his post, the confrontation happened around 7 am, when the driver, believed to be a foreign national, was about to fill his tank with the subsidised fuel. Izzul intervened before the car was fully refuelled.

The video sparked a wave of positive reactions, with many commending Izzul for his timely action and civic-mindedness at a time when authorities are tightening enforcement against the misuse of fuel subsidies by foreign vehicles.

According to Malaysian regulations, petrol station operators who sell subsidised fuel to foreign-registered vehicles face fines of up to RM1 million (US$228,000) for a first offence.

Repeat violations can result in fines of up to RM3 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

Some social media users suggested that staff could prevent misuse by pressing the “Stop” button on the pump and intervening immediately.

Others criticised station operators for allowing the attempt, with some arguing that stricter action should be taken against non-compliant outlets.
