Authorities confirmed on Thursday morning that the death toll from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in northern Cebu has risen to 72, according to Cebu News Daily’s update on 2 October 2025 at 11.27 am.

On Wednesday (1 Oct), rescue teams recovered three more bodies from the debris of a collapsed motel in Barangay Gairan, Bogo City.

The operation, carried out by members of the 53rd Engineering Brigade, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, took several hours as crews carefully sifted through rubble.

Two days after the province’s deadliest earthquake in recent history, the hardest-hit municipalities—including Medellin, San Remigio, and Tabogon—remain in crisis.

Families displaced by the tremor continue to plead for tents, food, and clean drinking water, with many sleeping in open fields or along roadsides due to the risk of aftershocks.

Basic services remain disrupted, with electricity and running water still unavailable across large areas.

In a statement, Bogo City Mayor Mayel Martinez said local authorities would shift focus from search and recovery to urgent relief distribution.
