But in one small household, a four-year-old dog named Luke showed what true loyalty looks like.
According to Cebu Daily News, Luke — an “aspin” or native dog with a golden retriever father — ran toward the danger instead of away from it.
As the walls of his family’s home began to crumble, Luke placed himself between them and the falling debris.
His act of courage spared his owners from serious injuries, but left him badly hurt.
Rescuers Race Against Time
Rescue group Hope for Strays told Cebu Daily News that Luke’s lower body was crushed under the rubble, leaving him unable to walk when he was finally found.
Two days after the quake, on 2 October, rescuers located Luke around 10.30 pm and rushed him to a veterinary clinic in Danao City.
The three-hour trip was long and painful — he could only sit or lie still due to his injuries.
Signs of Recovery
Despite the trauma, Luke has been showing signs of recovery.
As of 5 October, veterinarians confirmed that he’s responsive and eating well, though there are concerns about possible nerve damage in his pelvic area.
Community Rallies Behind Luke
His bravery has since touched thousands online.
Social media posts about Luke’s rescue have gone viral, drawing an outpouring of support and donations for his medical care, which is estimated to cost around ₱12,000 (approximately US$210).
“He sustained injuries in the process, but the good news is he is now safe,” Hope for Strays said. “He deserves all the rest and recovery in the world.”
For many, Luke’s story has become a symbol of devotion — a reminder that even in moments of fear, love can take the form of quiet courage.
