SINGAPORE — A sprinkler pipe burst at City Square Mall on Tuesday (3 Sept) evening, causing significant flooding across its basement levels and spilling into the underpass leading to Farrer Park MRT station.
The incident occurred at around 8pm on Basement 1 of the mall, located at 180 Kitchener Road. Shoppers reported hearing a loud noise before dark-coloured water began gushing from overhead pipes, rapidly covering the floor.
Videos posted on TikTok showed water spraying across the dining area of the KFC outlet, where customers were seen abandoning their meals and wading through puddles. Footage later showed the liquid seeping into the MRT underpass, prompting staff to redirect foot traffic away from the affected passageway.
Mall issues apology and updates tenants
City Square Mall issued a public apology on Facebook the following day, assuring visitors that safety was its “top priority.”
“Your safety and comfort are important to us. We apologise for the inconvenience that the burst sprinkler pipe caused last evening,” the post read.
The mall said rectification and cleanup works began immediately after the incident. It confirmed that while a few units were affected, most outlets at Basement 1 and Basement 2 remained open for business.
“We are doing our utmost to support our affected tenants and appreciate your understanding, patience, and continued support,” the management added.
Cause identified and prompt response by staff
In response to media queries, the mall explained that its operations and security teams had quickly cordoned off the affected area and redirected foot traffic to ensure shopper safety. Cleaning crews were deployed within minutes to remove excess water.
“The operations team deployed to the area identified the source to be a dislodged sprinkler pipe, and the related pump was promptly deactivated,” a spokesperson said.
The mall added that inspections of nearby systems were conducted to ensure there were no further risks to public safety.
No injuries reported
No injuries were reported from the incident, and authorities were not required to intervene.
City Square Mall, which recently completed renovation works in May 2025, resumed normal operations the following day.
While the flooding caused temporary inconvenience for tenants and diners, social media users praised the mall’s swift response and the efforts of cleaning staff to restore normalcy within hours.
