SINGAPORE: Singapore actor-host Collin Chee has apologised for disclosing private details of late Hong Kong actor Benz Hui’s funeral, after Hui’s daughter publicly criticised an unnamed individual for leaking information from what was intended to be a strictly private ceremony.
Hui, widely known as Foon Hei Gor for his role in Line Walker, died at 76 on 28 October from multiple organ failure caused by cancer.
His memorial was held on 17 November, followed by the funeral a day later in Hong Kong.
Funeral Meant to Be Strictly Private
In a post on 6 December, Hui’s daughter Charmaine thanked guests who honoured the closed-door rules — no recording, filming or sharing — and said the family was “immensely disappointed” by one Singaporean individual’s conduct.
Hong Kong outlets HK01 and Sing Tao Headline identified the person as Collin Chee, a long-time acquaintance of Hui’s family who had worked with Hui’s wife at the former Television Corporation of Singapore and co-emceed Charmaine’s wedding in January 2024.
Chee Says He Meant No Harm
Chee had earlier shared with local media his impressions of the funeral, including differences in customs and excerpts from the eulogy delivered by Hui’s stepson.
He also mentioned a 20-minute tribute video prepared by TVB.
Speaking from Brunei on 7 December, Chee apologised, saying he had only hoped to highlight what a “wonderful person” Hui was.
He stressed that he followed the no-photo and no-video rules, and that his comments were intended to be respectful.
Chee added that he has attempted to apologise privately to Hui’s family, but his calls and messages have gone unanswered.
He reiterated that any inappropriate disclosure was unintentional and expressed regret for causing distress to the bereaved family.
