SINGAPORE: Two men, aged 50 and 70, were arrested after allegedly fighting at a coffeeshop located at Block 19 Ghim Moh Road in Dover on the evening of 13 January.
According to local reports, the dispute may have started after one man allegedly asked the other for money to buy drinks.
Another account suggested the argument stemmed from the two men bumping into each other while walking past the coffeeshop.
A witness, Chen, a 58-year-old retired teacher, said he was dining with his mother when he saw a man dressed in black, believed to be in his 60s or 70s, fighting with another man wearing a floral-printed shirt.
Umbrella attack captured on CCTV
The coffeeshop manager, surnamed Zhang (name transliterated), said he witnessed the man in black striking the other man with an umbrella at around 5pm, adding that the umbrella was damaged during the scuffle, highlighting how intense the fight was.
CCTV footage showed the two men wrestling on the floor before being separated by staff. Both men sustained visible injuries.
However, just one to two minutes later, the man in black reportedly rushed back and attempted to attack the other man again, forcing Zhang to intervene a second time.
Second confrontation escalates with scissors
At around 7pm, the man in black returned to the coffeeshop once more. Zhang claimed the man dashed towards the other diner, pulled him off his chair and was seen holding a pair of scissors.
“I quickly rushed over and restrained his hand until he let go,” Zhang said.
Photos taken at the scene showed paramedics bandaging the man in black’s arm, while blood stains were visible on the floral-printed shirt of the other man.
Elderly man breaks down in tears
After a diner alerted the police, officers arrived at the scene and conducted investigations for about 45 minutes.
Several individuals believed to be family members and friends of both men later arrived.
During the investigation, the man in the floral-printed shirt was seen crying and repeatedly saying that he did not want to go to the police station, according to witnesses.
Despite this, both men eventually left the scene with the police.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed it was alerted to a case of fighting at around 7.10pm. Both men were arrested for affray.
They sustained minor injuries but refused conveyance to hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.
