SINGAPORE: A man was seen cleaning up a drink spilt by another passenger on an MRT train using his own spare T-shirt — an act of civic-mindedness that has drawn widespread praise online.
The heartwarming incident was shared by Facebook user Julie Tan on Sunday (26 Oct) in the Singapore MRT System Facebook group.
It reportedly took place at about 11.17am on the North–South Line, between Bukit Gombak and Jurong East stations.
In a photo accompanying the post, the man, dressed in a green T-shirt and wearing a bucket hat, was seen kneeling on the floor while holding a cup wrapped in plastic.
A piece of clothing, believed to be his spare T-shirt, was laid on the floor to soak up the spilt liquid.
According to Tan, another passenger — seated to the right of the photo with a red suitcase — dropped their drink, causing the spill.
Tan said she decided to share the post to commend the man’s “excellent and exceptional civic consciousness.”
“I am sharing this to commend this young fella’s excellent and exceptional civic consciousness. No one else paid any attention nor cared to bother, as seen in the photo,” she wrote.

Netizens Praise the Man
The post has since garnered positive reactions from netizens, many of whom praised the man for his thoughtful and selfless act.

One user commented that incidents like this highlight why food and drinks are prohibited on MRT trains and buses. “All thanks to this kind of inconsiderate passengers,” the user wrote.

Calls for Stricter Enforcement
Some users called for stricter enforcement against bringing food and drinks onto MRT trains to prevent spills and maintain cleanliness.

Another commenter suggested that SMRT could consider placing small spill kits or quick-dry napkins on trains for such situations. “A small step, but it keeps the ride pleasant for everyone!” the user said.
