 SINGAPORE: A 61-year-old motorist has been arrested following a fatal traffic accident in Bukit Batok that claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian on 22 December 2025, according to police and civil defence authorities.

The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the incident at about 5pm on 22 December.

The accident involved a car and a pedestrian along Bukit Batok West Avenue 9, towards Bukit Batok West Avenue 8.

A 79-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

The police said a 61-year-old man was arrested for driving without due care and attention, causing death.

Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.

The fatal accident has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about road safety, particularly for elderly pedestrians.

Traffic Police statistics show a continued rise in serious traffic incidents in 2025.

According to figures released by the Traffic Police, there were 3,818 traffic accidents resulting in injuries and deaths in the first half of 2025.

This represented an increase of 8.9 per cent compared with the same period in 2024.

In its midyear traffic report, the Traffic Police said accidents involving vulnerable road users remained a significant concern.

“Accidents involving vulnerable road users, particularly elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists, continue to account for a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities and injuries,” the report stated.

Data from the same report showed that accidents involving elderly pedestrians increased notably.

In the first half of 2025, there were 116 such accidents, up from 98 in the first half of 2024.

The rise in fatalities among elderly pedestrians was even more pronounced.

Deaths in this group more than doubled to 15 in the first half of 2025, compared with six during the same period a year earlier.

Elderly pedestrians accounted for 78.9 per cent of all pedestrian deaths recorded in the first half of 2025.
