Seven individuals, including a firefighter and a child, were taken to hospital on 29 July 2025 following a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat fire in Toa Payoh.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the fire began in a unit on the 10th floor of Block 229 Toa Payoh Lorong 8 and later spread to the unit directly above on the 11th floor.

SCDF was alerted at about 1.10pm. When firefighters arrived, the 10th-floor flat was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters used two water jets to bring the blaze under control.

Another team forced entry into the 11th-floor unit above, which had also caught fire. That fire was extinguished using a single water jet.

In an update posted at 5.39pm, SCDF reported that two people from the affected 10th-floor flat and three from nearby units were assessed for smoke inhalation. One of them also suffered burn injuries.

All five were taken to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for treatment.

A child from a neighbouring unit, who was assessed for smoke inhalation, was conveyed to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

During operations, a firefighter experienced fatigue and felt unwell due to smoke exposure. He was also taken to SGH as a precautionary measure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, SCDF said.

Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC), Saktiandi Supaat, confirmed that seven individuals were hospitalised. He added that the firefighter affected by smoke inhalation was conscious when taken to hospital.

Videos and photos shared by residents showed thick, dark smoke billowing from multiple windows of the affected flats. Several window frames appeared warped and severely damaged by the intense heat.

No other injuries were reported, and the fire was fully extinguished within the afternoon.
