Two people were found dead after a fire broke out in a flat at Block 173 Toa Payoh Lorong 1 on 22 July 2025, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

In a statement posted on Facebook, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 7.30pm. When firefighters arrived, the living room of the second-floor unit was ablaze.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled flat and extinguished the flames using a water jet.

According to the Singapore Police Force, a man and a woman were discovered lying motionless inside. Both were brought out but pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

Three people from neighbouring units were assessed for smoke inhalation and conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for treatment.

Videos shared online showed thick smoke pouring from the flat’s doorway and flames raging in the living room as firefighters battled the blaze.

Neighbours told Lianhe Zaobao the unit was believed to be occupied by two cousins who reportedly stored miscellaneous items in the flat.

Member of Parliament for Bishan–Toa Payoh GRC, Cai Yinzhou, visited the site to check on residents’ well-being.

Cai said three affected units have received temporary accommodation arranged by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), while the People’s Association provided bedding and essential supplies.

HDB engineers were deployed to assess the block’s structural safety, and town council teams are restoring electricity to affected areas. Cleaning support will also be offered to residents over the coming days.

Cai noted that some unaffected units opted to seek alternative housing due to asthmatic or health concerns involving children and elderly residents.

Grassroots leaders have reached out to affected households and will conduct follow-up visits next week.

SCDF and police investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
