THAILAND: A parasailing instructor in Phuket, Thailand, took a dramatic plunge into the sea on 16 October after releasing his safety harness mid-air to protect his customer when strong winds struck the area.
Eyewitness footage captured the harrowing incident, showing the pair being tossed violently as a storm swept across the island around 3pm.
Guide releases harness to reduce weight
According to local media, the instructor deliberately detached himself from the parasail to reduce its load and stabilise the descent of the tourist, who remained harnessed to the chute.
The video shows the parasail initially gliding smoothly before powerful gusts sent it spinning out of control.
Gasps can be heard from onlookers as the pair descended rapidly toward the water.
Moments later, the guide released himself and plunged directly into the sea.
The parasail then regained balance and descended gradually until the tourist landed safely in the water.
Rescue and minor injuries reported
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and brought both individuals to hospital.
According to Channel 7 News and Matichon, the guide sustained minor facial injuries, while the tourist was treated for chest tightness.
Both were later reported to be in stable condition.
