THAILAND: Thai Central Investigation Bureau officers say a woman attempted to feign spirit possession during questioning over a major drug-trafficking case involving five kilogrammes of methamphetamine.

The case dates back to 5 August, when Lampang’s Chaban police stopped a long-distance bus and discovered meth hidden in ten tea-leaf packets.
Police estimated the haul to be worth about US$40,000.

Couple arrested in Mae Sai

A male suspect arrested at the scene told officers the drugs had come from a couple based in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai.

Investigators secured arrest warrants and later detained the pair behind Mae Sai Hospital.

Suspect claims “spirit possession”

During interrogation, the woman, identified as Mani, suddenly shook violently and claimed she was “possessed by a spirit”.

Her husband, Songyut, supported the claim, telling officers a supernatural force had entered her body.

Police immediately dismissed the act. One officer warned that if the “spirit” did not leave, both the suspect and the spirit would be taken to jail. Mani then calmed down and continued cooperating.

Charges and legal action

According to investigators, the pair are suspected of jointly possessing and trafficking Category 1 drugs with intent to profit, as well as endangering public safety and national security. Both have been handed over to Nanlat Police Station for legal proceedings.

Authorities say the case highlights the increasingly creative attempts made by suspects to evade responsibility, but stressed that investigations will continue based on evidence gathered.
