An Air China flight bound for South Korea made an emergency landing in Shanghai on 18 October 2025, after a power bank exploded inside an overhead compartment, sparking a mid-air fire.

Flight CA139, an Airbus A321-232 travelling from Hangzhou to Incheon, was forced to divert to Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Videos shared online showed smoke filling part of the cabin as crew members worked swiftly to extinguish the flames.

The fire reportedly started when a passenger’s power bank overheated and exploded inside luggage stored in the overhead compartment.

Cabin crew managed to contain the situation, and the aircraft landed safely in Shanghai with no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.

The airline is investigating the cause of the power bank malfunction.
