Utah authorities arrest suspect in fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk
Utah officials have arrested Tyler Robinson, a 27-year-old from St. George, in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on the campus of Utah Valley University. A tip from Robinson’s family led to the arrest, with investigators citing ideological motives and recovering a rifle near the scene.

- Tip from family member led police to the suspect.

Authorities in Utah have confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting of political commentator and conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot on the campus of Utah Valley University (UVU) on 10 September 2025.
The suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson of St. George, Utah, was taken into custody after a family member alerted law enforcement. Officials believe Robinson fired a single, fatal shot from a rooftop overlooking the campus courtyard.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox formally announced the arrest on 12 September during a press conference, declaring, “Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.”
Robinson has been booked into the Utah County Jail, with formal charges expected early next week. Authorities confirmed that he was not a student at UVU.
Tip from family led to arrest
According to Governor Cox, a friend of Robinson’s family contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday evening, reporting that Robinson had either confessed to or strongly implied involvement in the killing.
Law enforcement officers then interviewed a relative, who said Robinson had become increasingly political in recent years. During a family dinner, he had expressed anger toward Kirk after learning the conservative activist would be speaking at UVU.
Governor Cox commended the family’s courage in coming forward. “I want to thank the family members of Tyler Robinson who did the right thing,” he said. “Their decision helped bring this case closer to justice.”
Rifle and bullet casings recovered
Investigators recovered a high-powered bolt-action Mauser .30-06 calibre rifle believed to be the murder weapon. It was found wrapped in a towel and hidden in shrubbery near the UVU campus, close to the suspected escape route.
Forensic testing is being conducted at FBI laboratories in Quantico, Virginia. FBI Director Kash Patel said more than 11,000 tips were received during the investigation, ultimately leading to the identification of the suspect.
Authorities also recovered three bullet casings at the scene, each inscribed with handwritten messages. One read “Hey fascist! CATCH!”; another quoted the anti-fascist anthem Bella Ciao; and the third said, “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”
Officials said the inscriptions offered strong evidence of ideological motivation behind the attack. “The words speak for themselves,” one law enforcement official commented.
Timeline of events
Police provided a detailed reconstruction of events leading up to the shooting.
At 11:52 a.m. on 10 September, Robinson arrived at the UVU campus in Orem, Utah. Surveillance cameras recorded him carrying a long, wrapped object as he entered a building near the outdoor venue where Kirk was scheduled to speak.
Footage then showed Robinson climbing onto the rooftop shortly before noon. At approximately 12:20 p.m., a single shot was fired, striking Kirk as he addressed the crowd.
The commentator collapsed immediately and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by descending a maintenance ladder and escaping through a nearby residential area.
National response and political implications
The shooting has sent shockwaves through U.S. political circles.
President Donald Trump confirmed the arrest during an interview on Fox & Friends on Friday morning, several hours before Utah’s official press conference. “With a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” Trump said.
He praised the suspect’s family for assisting law enforcement and added, “In Utah, you have the death penalty, and a good governor there. The governor is intent on the death penalty in this case — and he should be.”
Governor Cox did not confirm whether prosecutors would pursue capital punishment but said Robinson’s arrest would allow the justice process to begin “with integrity and transparency.”
Political motives under investigation
Officials have not yet released a motive but said evidence indicates political and ideological factors may have influenced the suspect.
Robinson, according to family accounts, had become increasingly radicalised online and frequently expressed hostility toward conservative figures on social media.
Investigators are examining his digital activity, including posts and messages found on encrypted channels. Authorities said no additional suspects are expected.
Call for calm amid rising hostility
Governor Cox used the press conference to urge the public to resist further division.
“To my young friends out there, you are inheriting a country where politics feels like rage,” he said. “But we can choose a different path.”
He described Kirk’s killing as a political assassination and “an attack on all of us,” adding that the tragedy should serve as a warning against violent extremism.
“Violence cannot be our language of disagreement,” Cox said. “Utah will stand firm against hatred — of any kind.”
Ongoing investigation and next steps
The FBI and Utah County Attorney’s Office are coordinating the prosecution. Formal charges are expected to be filed early next week, pending completion of forensic testing.
Authorities said they are still reviewing surveillance footage and ballistic evidence to confirm that the recovered rifle matches the weapon used in the shooting.
A spokesperson for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Robinson is being held without bail. He has requested legal representation but has not entered a plea.
Remembering Charlie Kirk
Charlie Kirk, 31, was the founder of the conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA and a prominent advocate for conservative causes.
He was known for his outspoken commentary on U.S. campuses and social media, often drawing both strong support and vocal criticism.
Kirk’s death has prompted vigils across several states, with supporters describing him as “a passionate advocate for American values.”
His family released a statement expressing gratitude to authorities and the public for their support, calling for “justice and peace, not vengeance.”
The statement read, “Charlie believed in freedom of speech, debate, and faith. He would never have wanted his death to deepen the divides he worked to bridge.”
Broader concern over political violence
The incident has reignited debate over political polarisation and public safety at university events.
Security experts said the attack reflects a worrying rise in politically motivated violence in the United States.
Universities nationwide are reviewing safety procedures for public speakers, particularly those associated with controversial political movements.
As the investigation continues, officials have urged the public to refrain from speculation and await verified updates from law enforcement.
