KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: A 34-year-old Malaysian man who allegdly borrowed just US$210 (RM1,000) from an online loan ad ended up humiliated, blackmailed, and socially ostracised after being forced to record a nude video, which was later circulated among his friends and family.
The victim, Mr. Wong, said he had borrowed the money two months ago from a lender he found on Facebook, but only received US$105 (RM500) in cash after fees were deducted.
The lender warned that late payments would incur penalties — but Wong never expected the “interest” to rise at US$95 (RM450) per hour, leaving him trapped in a spiralling cycle of debt.
Under mounting pressure, Wong took out multiple additional loans from loan sharks, a situation he described as “ten pots, nine lids” — borrowing repeatedly to cover old debts.
Although he has since repaid about US$1,050 (RM5,000), he said the harassment and threats have not stopped.
Threatened with Trafficking, Forced to Film Nude Video
At a press conference held with the Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO), Wong recounted being summoned by debt collectors on 8 November.
Three men, allegedly hired by loan sharks, gave him two choices — repay US$2,100 (RM10,000) immediately, or be sold to Myanmar.
When he said he could not pay, the men forced him into a toilet, made him strip naked, and recorded a video of him.
They also seized his phone and other belongings.
To his horror, the next day the explicit video was shared by the loan sharks to his WhatsApp family and friends’ group, exposing him to severe shame and psychological trauma.
Emotional Toll and Family Fallout
The humiliation had devastating personal consequences — Wong said his girlfriend left him, and his parents disowned him out of anger and embarrassment over his debts.
“I was completely broken. I had no one to turn to. I even thought about ending my life,” he told reporters.
MHO secretary-general Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim urged authorities to intensify crackdowns on illegal moneylenders, warning that such predatory online lending schemes were destroying lives.
