KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian singer and songwriter Wee Meng Chee, popularly known as Namewee, has pleaded not guilty to a new charge of possessing a controlled substance at the magistrates’ court.

Wee appeared in court on 19 January 2026, where he was accused of possessing 0.78g of Sildenafil at a hotel room in Banyan Tree Hotel, Jalan Conlay, on 22 October 2025.

Sildenafil is classified as a controlled substance under Malaysian law and is commonly found in medication used to treat erectile dysfunction.

The charge was framed under Section 9(1) of the Poison Act. If convicted, Wee could face a fine of up to RM50,000 (approx. US$12,322) , or a term of imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

During the same proceedings, Wee also pleaded not guilty to an amended charge of possessing 1.57g of methamphetamine at the same hotel and on the same date.

Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim fixed 5 March 2026 for the next mention of the case.

According to court records, Wee had previously been released on bail of RM2,000 with one surety in relation to the drug possession charge.

The latest proceedings follow earlier developments in the case.

In December 2025, Wee was acquitted of a drug use charge after his urine test returned a negative result.

Wee was initially arrested on 22 October 2025 at a hotel in the capital, where police said nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy were found in his room.

According to police statements made at the time, Wee’s urine sample allegedly tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

He was charged in court two days after his arrest, leading to multiple proceedings relating to drug possession and use.

The prosecution later amended one of the charges, resulting in the current methamphetamine possession allegation that Wee has now denied.

In a separate matter, the musician was also arrested as part of an investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yun Hsin.

Wee was subsequently released on bail in that case, pending the completion of toxicology and post-mortem reports.
