MALAYSIA: A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old student at SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, on 14 October 2025.
Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that the suspect allegedly stabbed the female student outside a classroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police have not yet established a motive behind the attack. The incident occurred near the 1 Utama Shopping Centre, one of the largest malls in the Klang Valley.
According to Bernama, authorities recovered two sharp objects believed to have been used in the stabbing. Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said initial investigations did not reveal any elements of bullying.
He added that the suspect and victim were known to each other as they attended the same school, though in different academic levels.
Police received a report about the incident at 9.40am after a teacher heard screams and discovered the victim near the toilet area.
Preliminary checks indicated that the victim sustained multiple stab wounds. A post-mortem examination was scheduled at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre later that day.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The suspect is expected to be brought to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court on 15 October for a remand application.
Under Malaysian law, a conviction for murder carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and not less than 12 strokes of the cane. Malaysia’s minimum age of criminal responsibility is 10 years old.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said the Ministry of Education would fully cooperate with the investigation.
“The ministry extends its condolences to the family of the student who died after being stabbed at a school in Selangor today,” she said in a statement, adding that counsellors have been deployed to the school to provide emotional support.
Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari said police confirmed that the case did not involve any racial elements.
“As a father with daughters of my own, I cannot begin to imagine the pain the victim’s parents are going through,” Amirudin said in a statement. “Schools should be the safest places for our children, and the state government will cooperate with the police, the Ministry of Education, and the community to enhance safety in all schools.”
Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or victim due to their ages.
The tragedy has sparked public concern about safety in educational institutions, prompting calls for closer monitoring of students’ wellbeing and improved conflict prevention measures in schools.
