Elderly resident emotional as volunteers clear cluttered Ang Mo Kio home
A coordinated team of about 40 volunteers and cleaners spent Sunday, 30 November, clearing a heavily cluttered Ang Mo Kio flat occupied by an elderly woman and her daughter. Consent from the daughter was secured earlier, and large volumes of items were removed from both the corridor and the unit.

- Volunteers and cleaners conducted a major cleanup at a heavily cluttered Ang Mo Kio flat.
- The operation, led by AMKSS Social Move, cleared items filling the unit and obstructing the shared corridor.
- Consent was obtained from the resident’s daughter, whose belongings formed most of the clutter.
An extensive clearance operation was carried out on 30 November at a flat in Ang Mo Kio, where severe clutter had accumulated over the years.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the occupants were an elderly woman in her 80s and her daughter.
Large quantities of items had filled the shared corridor outside the three-room unit.
The walkway was narrowed by trolleys, suitcases, brooms, dustpans and egg trays, making it difficult for neighbours to pass safely.
Umbrellas were also seen hanging from the unit’s metal gate.
Inside, the clutter reportedly reached the ceiling, leaving only a narrow passageway for movement.
The cleanup began at 9am on Sunday. Around 40 volunteers and cleaners participated in the coordinated effort, which was led by Michael Sim, founder of the charity organisation AMKSS Social Move.
A town council cleaner told Shin Min Daily News that 10 large green bins had been prepared in advance.
Within the first 30 minutes, more than five bins were filled with discarded items.
Mr Sim said the flat is occupied by the elderly resident and her daughter, who is in her 50s.
He added that volunteers had previously spoken with the daughter and obtained her consent before arranging the operation.
It is understood that most of the accumulated items belonged to the daughter.
During the cleanup, the elderly woman reportedly became emotional as she watched some of her belongings being removed.
