A fire occurred on the afternoon of 20 June 2025 at the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) confirmed.
The fire alarm was triggered at 1.51 pm, and BMTC staff responded promptly after noticing smoke.
Staff contained blaze
According to MINDEF, the accommodation block was unoccupied at the time of the incident. BMTC personnel managed to put out the fire before external firefighting assistance was required.
No injuries were reported among staff or trainees.
“A fire was promptly extinguished by BMTC staff who had heard the fire alarm and spotted the smoke,” a spokesperson said, adding that the swift response prevented escalation.
Social media footage emerges
A video circulated on TikTok after the incident shows the charred interior of a bunk with blackened walls and ceilings, overturned mattresses and exposed wiring.
In the footage, a man is seen using a hose to spray water, apparently to reduce residual heat or dampen remaining hotspots.
The video caption suggested that the damaged block belonged to Viper company, though MINDEF has not confirmed this detail.
Investigations under way
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) said it is working with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to determine the cause of the fire.
“The SAF remains committed to upholding high standards of fire safety to ensure a safe environment for our service personnel,” MINDEF stated. “As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide further comments at this juncture.”
No preliminary findings have been released, and it is unclear if the fire was linked to electrical faults or other possible causes.
Training unaffected
The incident did not involve active training areas, and operations at BMTC have continued as scheduled.
Pulau Tekong, home to Singapore’s national servicemen undergoing basic training, houses multiple accommodation and training facilities. Fire safety has been a longstanding priority, with regular drills and equipment inspections mandated by MINDEF.
