SINGAPORE: A group of Malaysian anglers found themselves unintentionally drifting into Singapore waters after stopping to have lunch on their boat, resulting in a brief but cordial encounter with a Singapore Coast Guard officer.
The incident was shared on TikTok by one of the anglers and has since drawn warm responses from viewers in both Malaysia and Singapore.
Anglers unaware they had crossed the boundary
In the video, the angler explained that the group had been eating and did not realise their boat had drifted due to strong seasonal winds.
“Sorry, brother. We were eating and didn’t realise we drifted into Singapore waters,” the man said.
The officer responded calmly and reassured them that they were not in any trouble.
“It’s okay. We just need to check. No need to run from us — we’re not going to do anything,” the officer said.
Coast Guard Officer explains procedure
Addressing the anglers’ concern that they might be “dragged to the other side,” the officer firmly denied such misconceptions.
“No such thing. Why would we drag you over? Usually, we check, inform you that you’ve entered our waters, and advise you to head back,” he explained.
He added that another motorboat had drifted in earlier, and his team had simply allowed them to leave after notifying them.
Light-hearted banter follows
The conversation later turned light-hearted when the officer casually asked two of the anglers if they were married.
After both replied yes, the officer joked that the most important thing was that their wives allowed them to go fishing.
He added humorously that when he tells his own wife he wants to go fishing, “her face immediately turns grumpy,” drawing laughter from the anglers.
Video gains attention on both sides of the causeway
The wholesome interaction, featuring a mix of apology, reassurance, and friendly chatter about fishing, has gone viral on TikTok, with many viewers praising the officer’s professionalism and friendly manner.
The incident also highlighted how strong winds and currents can lead small fishing boats to unintentionally drift across maritime boundaries.
