SINGAPORE: A 40-year-old man was charged on Friday with arranging a gathering where controlled drugs were allegedly consumed with former lawyer Ravi Madasamy, widely known as M Ravi, hours before Ravi’s death.
Shawn Loo Zhi Jian is accused of arranging a gathering to consume methamphetamine at a flat along Upper Boon Keng Road on 24 December 2025, between 1am and 5am.
Background of the accused
Court documents identified Loo as an assistant vice president at a foreign bank.
His LinkedIn profile shows he joined the bank in 2011 after graduating from Singapore Management University.
During the court hearing, the prosecution requested an adjournment of one week pending the results of drug tests and the retrieval of security camera footage related to the case.
Loo is expected to return to court on 2 January 2026. Bail was offered at S$20,000.
Events leading to Ravi’s death
Ravi, 56, died on 24 December 2025.
Police had previously said he consumed drugs with a friend before being found unconscious at the Upper Boon Keng Road flat.
Paramedics responded to a call at around 5.40am that morning. The friend present told authorities that Ravi had reacted adversely to the drugs.
He said he administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation before calling for emergency assistance. Ravi was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Police and CNB investigations
The Central Narcotics Bureau arrested the man at the flat, while Ravi was conveyed to hospital. In a joint statement issued on 26 December, the police and CNB said officers seized drug-related items from the premises.
The man’s urine tested positive for a controlled drug in an instant urine test. His urine samples will be sent to the Health Sciences Authority for confirmatory analysis.
Preliminary investigations found that both men had known each other since 2023 and first met through a social networking application.
Authorities said the man stated that both of them had consumed drugs that allegedly came from each of them during the gathering.
Ravi’s legal legacy
Members of the legal profession paid tribute to Ravi following news of his death. He began practising law in 1997 and became known for his outspoken advocacy on human rights issues.
Ravi was a prominent opponent of Section 377A, the law criminalising sex between men, which was repealed in 2022. He had also spoken publicly about living with bipolar disorder since his diagnosis in 2006 and faced multiple disciplinary proceedings during his career.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
