SINGAPORE: The stall owner who went viral for a TikTok video interacting with a pupil has announced the end of his journey at Mee Toh School.
Mr Rayner Tan, 27, who runs the Hearty Green (Vegetarian) stall, posted on TikTok on 18 November 2025 that he will not be renewing his lease in 2026.
He cited challenges dealing with the school, the Ministry of Education (MOE), parents, and figuring out his next steps.
The Video That Caught Attention
The viral clip showed a student throwing a $2 note onto the counter, with Mr Tan returning it and saying, “Pass me properly.”
The video, which gained over 2.5 million views by 7 November 2025, drew both praise for teaching good etiquette and criticism for what some saw as a harsh tone.
Complaint and Video Removal
A complaint was made to Mee Toh School asking the video to be removed.
Mr Tan said in his original TikTok post that “we were obligated to take it down along with other videos.” The clip has since been removed from his account.
Other Challenges
Beyond the viral attention, Mr Tan also highlighted “unsustainable income” as a reason for ending the stall.
“We are saddened that we couldn’t take this venture further,” he said, adding that he plans to update his followers on his next steps.
School’s Response
Principal Kelvin Tay confirmed the school received feedback from parents and the public.
He noted that Mr Tan had removed the video due to lack of parental consent and emphasised that the decision to end the lease was entirely Mr Tan’s own.
A Short but Documented Journey
Since opening the stall on 19 August, Mr Tan had been documenting his experience running Hearty Green on TikTok, sharing interactions with pupils while ensuring their faces were not shown.
