Singapore secure historic Asian Cup qualification with 2-1 win over Hong Kong
Singapore booked their place at the 2027 Asian Cup after a 2-1 comeback win over Hong Kong, marking the Lions’ first qualification on merit and prompting tributes across the country.

- Singapore qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup after a 2-1 win over Hong Kong in Kai Tak Stadium.
- Goals from Shawal Anuar and Ilhan Fandi secured the Lions’ first-ever qualification on merit.
- Leaders and public figures, including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, praised the historic achievement.
Singapore achieved a landmark moment on 18 November, 2025, by defeating Hong Kong 2-1 to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The Lions overturned a first-half deficit with two goals in four minutes, securing their first appearance at the continental tournament through performance rather than hosting.
According to match reports from Kai Tak Stadium, Hong Kong initially took the lead through Matt Orr’s header in the 15th minute.
Singapore regrouped strongly in the second half and mounted a comeback that stunned the home crowd of nearly 48,000 spectators.
The equaliser arrived in the 64th minute when a precise pass from Ilhan Fandi released Shawal Anuar, who lifted the ball over goalkeeper Wang Zhenpeng.
Ilhan then delivered the decisive moment four minutes later as he collected the ball inside the penalty area and finished confidently.
The striker’s celebration at the corner flag unfolded in silence as the Hong Kong supporters were left stunned by the swift reversal.
Singapore endured late pressure, including an inswinging freekick that struck the crossbar, but held firm to secure the crucial victory.
With five matches played, Singapore now lead Group C with 11 points.
Hong Kong remain on eight points, while India and Bangladesh have two points each and were scheduled to meet later that evening.
Under tournament regulations, head-to-head results take priority over goal difference.
This ensures Singapore’s position at the top is safe regardless of final-day fixtures next March, when they will host Bangladesh while Hong Kong travel to play India.
This achievement follows a qualification journey marked by fluctuating fortunes.
Earlier stages included a home draw with Hong Kong, a narrow 2-1 victory over Bangladesh in Dhaka, and a dominant performance over India that resulted in a late equaliser.
A 2-1 away triumph in India, combined with Hong Kong’s slip against Bangladesh, kept Singapore’s hopes alive ahead of the decisive match.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised the team in a message posted after the victory.
According to his statement, the team displayed “skillful play and guts in front of an overwhelming home crowd” and delivered a “great recovery after Hong Kong took the lead”.
He highlighted the significance of Singapore qualifying for the Asian Cup “for the first time on performance”.
Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim also shared his reflections.
He wrote that the result revived memories of earlier eras in Singapore football and noted that Ilhan Fandi’s decisive goal carried symbolic weight, given his father Fandi Ahmad’s status in local sporting history.
His message added that the comeback win reflected “self-belief” and expressed hope for a revival of Singapore’s footballing “glory days”.
Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo commended the team’s resilience.
In his remarks, he stated that the Lions had shown “all heart” across the five qualification matches and encouraged fans to offer full support as the team prepares for the Asian Cup.
The Lions now look ahead to refining their squad, maintaining form, and preparing for the heightened competition in Saudi Arabia in 2027.
Their breakthrough qualification marks a defining milestone after decades of near misses and sustained effort across the footballing ecosystem.
