TAIWAN: The case came to light on 18 January after a cousin of the suspect became concerned when she was unable to reach him by phone.

She went to his home in Luzhou, New Taipei City, and heard a mobile phone ringing inside but received no response.

Sensing something was wrong, she alerted the police.

Officers, accompanied by a locksmith, forced entry and found the suspect’s parents — a 67-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman — lying dead in the living room, surrounded by large amounts of blood.

Dozens of Stab Wounds Found

Initial police examinations revealed a total of 37 stab wounds on the two victims. Investigators believe the killings took place on the night of 17 January.

A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered from the scene. Both victims were pronounced dead at the location.

CCTV Footage Points to Son

Police reviewed nearby surveillance footage and found that the victims returned home at around 9pm on 17 January.

Shortly after, at about 9.31pm, their son — later identified as Liao Congxian — was seen leaving the building on a motorcycle.

He then disappeared and could not be contacted, making him the prime suspect.

Suspect’s Confession and Claimed Motive

After his arrest, Liao reportedly told police that he had suffered physical and verbal abuse from his parents since childhood and had long harboured thoughts of killing them.

He claimed the immediate trigger was a dispute over money, saying his mother only gave him a monthly allowance of NT$5,000 (approximately US$157) and sometimes none at all.

He alleged that after arguing with his mother, he later quarreled with his father and then used a machete he had previously bought and hidden at home to kill both parents.

However, forensic investigators noted discrepancies in Liao’s account. Bloodstain analysis suggested that the mother may have died before the father, contradicting the suspect’s version of events.

Authorities said further investigation is needed to establish the exact sequence of the killings.

27-Hour Manhunt Ends in Arrest

According to Luzhou Police Precinct, Liao fled the scene late on 17 January.

Police received the report at about 1pm on 18 January and immediately formed a special task force.

After 27 hours of continuous searching, officers arrested Liao at around 6pm on 19 January.

During his escape, he reportedly switched between motorcycles and taxis, hid in alleys and fire lanes, and repeatedly changed his appearance to avoid capture.

Police said the case will be investigated as the killing of direct lineal ascendants, a serious criminal offence under Taiwanese law.

Investigations into the motive, planning and method of the crime are ongoing.
