Fire breaks out at Bhumibol 2 Bridge in Thailand, investigation under way
Thai authorities have contained a fire at Bhumibol 2 Bridge in Samut Prakan after flames spread along a drainage pipe near a bridge pier. Officials said the main structure was not damaged, with engineers set to investigate the cause on 16 January.

THAILAND: Thai authorities have confirmed that a fire which broke out at Bhumibol 2 Bridge in Samut Prakan province has been brought under control, with no damage reported to the bridge’s main structure.
The incident occurred at about 7 pm on 15 January 2026, at a pier on the Pu Chao Saming Phrai side of the bridge.
Fire spreads along drainage pipe
Officials said the blaze engulfed a large black PPE rubber drainage pipe installed along the bridge to channel runoff from the road surface to the ground below.
Flames spread rapidly along the pipe at the base of the pier, prompting concern among motorists and nearby residents.
More than 10 fire engines were deployed after the Pu Chao Saming Phrai Municipality requested additional support.
Firefighters worked for over an hour to contain the blaze, which was brought under control by around 8.20 pm, preventing it from spreading to the bridge’s main structure.
Bridge deemed structurally sound
Rewat Sukkham, director of the Industrial Ring Road Division at the Department of Rural Highways, said the bridge remains structurally safe and was not affected by the fire.
Traffic disruption was limited as authorities focused on securing the area and assessing potential risks.
A team of specialist engineers and relevant officials will conduct an on-site inspection at 10 am on 16 January to determine the cause of the fire.
Phra Pradaeng district security chief Prin Jawathiyakul said preliminary findings suggest the blaze may have originated from sparks near the base of the pier, close to the drainage pipe.
Witnesses reported seeing children playing with toy cap guns in the area shortly before the fire.
Recent infrastructure incidents raise safety scrutiny
The bridge fire comes amid heightened attention on infrastructure safety in Thailand following two deadly incidents earlier this week.
On January 14, a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in Nakhon Ratchasima province, killing 32 people.
A day later, parts of a crane fell onto traffic on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon, killing two people.
Authorities said the Bhumibol 2 Bridge fire was contained quickly and did not damage the main structure, with no injuries reported.
