JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia — Malaysian police are investigating whether a popular online game may have influenced a violent incident in which a six-year-old boy was found with slash wounds to his neck and stab injuries to his body in Batu Pahat, Johor.
Johor Police Chief Datuk AB Rahaman Arsad said early findings suggest the boy may have been attacked by his nine-year-old brother at their home in Kampung Parit Nipah Laut, Parit Raja.
The parents, both in their 40s, have been detained to assist in the investigation.
Possible link to online game
“The injuries sustained by the child are believed to have been caused by his nine-year-old brother.
The motive is still under investigation, but there is a possible link to an online game installed on the brother’s mobile phone,”
AB Rahaman said during a press conference at the Johor Police Headquarters on 29 October 2025.
According to police, the older boy was an avid player of the game and had accumulated around one million points.
The incident reportedly occurred after the victim damaged his brother’s phone, causing the points to be lost. Local media reported that the online game in question is Roblox.
Hallucinations and ongoing investigation
“Based on our questioning, the brother may have been affected by the game. He experienced what seemed like hallucinations at night, as though hearing voices telling him to harm his family,” AB Rahaman said.
It is believed that the nine-year-old used a knife from the house to injure his younger brother. However, police stressed that investigations are ongoing.
Victim recovering, siblings under welfare supervision
The victim is currently receiving treatment at Batu Pahat Hospital and is in stable condition.
Both siblings are now under the supervision of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) as they are minors.
Police have not yet recorded the victim’s statement, pending medical clearance. The investigation papers have been referred to the Johor State Legal Adviser for further action.
Parents remanded for investigation
Earlier, the children’s parents — both aged 41 — were remanded for two days by the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court to assist with the case, which is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt and Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
