MALAYSIA: A man was fatally shot at a fast food restaurant in Banting, a town in Malaysia’s Selangor state, on Sunday night (4 January 2026), police said, in an incident that has renewed public concern over gun violence despite the country’s strict firearms laws.
The shooting occurred at about 10 pm while the victim was dining at the outlet.
Police were alerted shortly after, at around 10.05 pm.
Victim dies at scene
The victim was identified as a man in his late thirties.
He was later pronounced dead after collapsing outside the restaurant.
Police said two bullet casings were recovered at the scene.
Videos circulating on social media showed a suspect running up to the man and firing at him before fleeing.
Another clip showed the victim slumped on the pavement outside a McDonald’s outlet, with blood visible on the ground.
Suspect flees, investigations ongoing
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Investigations are ongoing and police are working to identify and locate the shooter.
Shootings are relatively rare in Malaysia due to strict gun control laws.
However, several high-profile cases in recent months — including a fatal shooting at a shopping mall in Selangor last year and suspected gang-related incidents in Klang and Seremban — have raised public concern.
Police have repeatedly said such incidents are isolated and targeted, but they have sparked debate over public safety and organised crime.
