SINGAPORE: Firefighters and rescuers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team spent two hours freeing a person whose arm became stuck in a kitchen drain pipe in a Housing Board flat in Lakeside on 27 November.
According to a statement published by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on Facebook, the incident occurred at Block 338A Tah Ching Road at about 1.35pm.
SCDF said that when responders arrived, they found the person in the flat with the entire left arm lodged in the drain pipe beneath the kitchen sink.
The operation required teams to work both in the affected unit and in the flat directly below to understand how the limb was trapped.
In the upper flat, rescuers dismantled the kitchen sink and the cabinet enclosing the drain pipe to provide adequate space for the operation.
SCDF added that another group of rescuers in the unit below cut a section of the pipe to inspect how the arm was positioned, which allowed them to plan a safe extraction.
Lubricant was applied to help free the arm once the structure of the pipe had been sufficiently exposed and assessed.
A medical team from Ng Teng Fong General Hospital was present throughout the operation to provide support, including the administration of an intravenous drip.
SCDF reported that the person remained conscious during the entire rescue effort and was later conveyed to National University Hospital for further medical evaluation.
